Seeing Christ

The listing of the cloud of witnesses in the “faith” chapter of Hebrews chapter 12 is preceded and concluded (Hebrews 11:39) by the encouragement found in these words: “For by it the elders obtained a good report.” These words to the Hebrews brought emphasis to the truth revealed in previous chapters – that the Old Testament believers were justified by seeing Christ as the Redeemer afar off as they performed the various commanded ordinances of God. The holy catalogue of saints in Hebrews 11 who lived by faith is also preceded by this verse: “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” Again, the emphasis is seeing Christ, by faith, but this time seeing Him as the Creator: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:1

Read the holy catalogue of saints and be encouraged, dear reader, to put your trust not in the commanded and blessed doing – attending and worshiping at church, prayer, reading scripture, training your children in the ways of the Lord, serving, obedience in persecution, and etc.; but rather to put your trust in and see the Who to Whom these blessed commands point us: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2).
