The Chosen Children
i’m a shriek in your ear
and blood in your rivers
i make my bed in refuse dumps
and am intimate with
i have known the warmth of the living
and have had my hand clasped by cold, metal death
and it was a greeting
i talk to you all the time
i begin the moment you say goodbye
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this,
To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and
Keep himself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27
James, in his usual pithy way, leaves no doubt as to the evidence of a truly converted heart: Help the helpless and do not be conformed to this world. Who are the helpless? Does this word of God only apply to orphans and widows? No, as through many verses in the Holy Scriptures, we learn biblical principles, not via an itemized list, but through example. Who ARE the helpless around us? Sometimes it is the people in our own homes – family members with trials, struggles, weaknesses. We need to “visit” them in their afflictions. This is evidence of our conversion. Sometimes the helpless are the people in our neighborhoods, churches or local and international communities. Perhaps we are, by God’s grace, sensitive to these helpless ones and take action in whatever way we can. This is evidence of our conversion.
But there is an incredibly large, helpless people group from whom many of us turn our eyes, hearts, hands and prayers, and they are the most helpless of all. The baby in the womb.
Since Roe v. Wade in 1972, 58 million babies in the United States have been slaughtered either in the womb or murdered during the birth process. In 2005, there were 1,206,200 abortions performed just in the United States alone (http://www.whyprolife.com/abortion-facts/). This is 3,315 abortions per day, and that would be 138 per minute. In the time it takes you to read this post, there will have been that many and more babies murdered by their mothers and abortionists. With the revelation of the selling of baby parts for profit, one can only guess what the abortion figures are today in 2016. If it is gruesome to abort by pill or by D & C, saline, or by scissors stabbed into the sweet baby’s head, the gruesomeness is almost unimaginable when the baby is kept alive and warm long enough to harvest organs to “help someone else live.” Check out the facts for yourself.
Christians, by prayer, by working hands, by working feet, by pen, show the evidence of your conversion and visit these helpless babes in their affliction.
