Fellow-Helpers to the Truth
“For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellow-helpers to the truth.” 3 John 3 – 8
Such a rich passage of Scripture. Here is the aged apostle, John, rejoicing in the spiritual growth of Gaius, his “child in the faith.” Here, he writes of those who have witnessed Gaius’ walk of truth. Here, Gaius’ service to the brethren and to strangers is called faithful. Here, John encourages Gaius to continue to help these believers because they are sacrificially living for Jesus’ sake. Here, John states that when we come alongside believers, we become fellow-helpers to the truth.
I am made to think of the body of Christ. Of the health of its corporate life made possible by loving acts of individual believers. I am made to think of the Godly effect we have on the spread of the gospel when we give money to the church. I am made to think of the domino truth-spreading effect as the result of helping believers with their physical or spiritual needs.
Always remember that your faithful aid to the body of Christ makes you a fellow-helper to the truth. The financial help, the meal, the babysitting, the lawn mowing, the listening ear, the card, the encouraging word – all these expressions of love for the body make you a fellow-helper to the truth. And what a great joy it is to uphold, manifest, and spread God’s glorious truth!
